Debut Author Challenge 2017

My reading challenge seemed a bit lacking this year – it’s only 26 books rather than the 40-50 I usually do – so I’ve been looking around for something to supplement it with.  There are a lot of themed challenges going around this year.  I mean, I probably looked through a good two dozen before I found one that sounded right.  And here it is, the 2017 debut author challenge.

So often, we read books from authors we love or authors that have been recommended by family or friends.  Ask someone off the street for a book recommendation and they’re bound to tell you about Nicholas Sparks or John Grisham or Dan Brown.  And there’s nothing wrong with those authors, of course, but it’s nice to give up and coming authors some exposure.

Some of my favorite books of 2016 were debuts.  Cherry by Lindsey Rosin.  Made You Up by Francesca Zappia.  A List of Cages by Robin Roe. None of these are necessarily books that would have been recommended by anybody but a book blogger.  (Mostly because none of them have gotten a ton of press.)

So, in 2017, I’ve set a goal to read at least twelve books by debut new adult, young adult, or middle-grade authors.  If you want to join me, head over to That Artsy Reader Girl and sign up for yourself!  There’s also an official Goodreads group, if that’s something you’re interested in.
