I’ve had a few books by R.S. Grey hanging out on my TBR, but when I started seeing reviews for Anything You Can Do flooding my Goodreads homepage, I knew it was time to jump in and see what I was missing. Anybody who’s spent any measurable amount of time on my blog knows that I’m a huge fan of both friends-to-lovers and enemies-to-lovers stories. Anything You Can Do falls firmly in the enemies-to-lovers genre, and it’s made even better by the fact that these two have been feuding since birth.
Neighbors Daisy Bell and Lucas Thatcher have been trying to one-up each other for almost thirty years. Their relentlessly competitive natures ensured that they both did well in school, headed to world-class universities, and obtained their medical degrees with little difficulty. Now, both Lucas and Daisy are back home, where they’ve both been offered positions at a local clinic. Although they were both under the impression that they would be the sole new doctor on staff, they quickly adapt to their new surroundings and let their competitive natures take over yet again.
The thing is, almost everybody knows that Daisy and Lucas will end up together. Their parents, their friends… even the whole town sees through the act and knows that they’re meant to be. I mean, just look at some of these quotes.
On coming home from school:
The idea of him popping up in our small town at any time made it impossible to enjoy the holidays.
On dating with Lucas living next door:
No boy ever picked me up for a date without Lucas lingering outside, somehow ruining the moment.
On being crowned king and queen of a dance:
I remember his hand shaking, enraged at the voters for forcing us together like that. I could feel his pulse through the palm of his hand.
Yes, Daisy, I am sure that you dreaded seeing Lucas. Clearly, he only tried to scare off your dates because he hated you. And yes, obviously, he was shaking from sheer terror at dancing with you, not because he was finally given an excuse to dance with the girl of his dreams. Mhmm. It’s blatantly obvious to everybody but Daisy that Lucas adores her. And it’s becoming increasingly hard for Daisy to ignore the way that a grown-up Lucas makes her feel.
When Daisy and Lucas finally give in to their mutual attraction, it’s electric. There is such a build up of sexual tension before anything happens that I wouldn’t have been surprised if I’d burst into flames. I loved the banter and the chemistry between Daisy and Lucas, and I will absolutely be on the lookout for more from this brilliant author.
