For Penny Lee high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she somehow managed to land a boyfriend, he doesn’t actually know anything about her. When Penny heads to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer, it’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind.
Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs. He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him.
When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness. Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch—via text—and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to see each other.
If you’re looking for a cute YA contemporary about heading off to college and finding yourself, I can’t recommend Emergency Contact enough!
PS: I wish I was as good at texting as Penny and Sam.

I haven’t read the book yet but definitely adding it to my TBR because I’ve had that kind of relationship too. Well, it lead to heartbreak in the end for me, I hope the ending of the book is different from mine. Thanks for the review!

As soon as I saw that you’ve reviewed “Emergency Contact” I got all excited because I really needed to know how this book really is. I read pretty awful reviews of this book, reading something nice and positive was a breath of fresh air.
Since I had already made up my mind to read the book(the story seems nice and the cover is gorgeous), I got another reason after reading your blog and now I cannot wait eee!
Thanks friend for a lovely review 🙂

I’d seen a lot of negative reviews, so I was kind of bracing myself to hate it. But I was so pleasantly surprised and I’m so happy that you’re planning to read it! I hope you like it! 🙂

It sounds really sweet. While cell phones weren’t a thing when I was that age, I remember relationships that were lifelines during tough times like that .. I’m adding this to my TBR list

Thanks, I haven’t read any books about school shootings but they seems like something I’d really be into. It gives me a We Were Liars vibe.

Nice review! I’m thinking about maybe picking this up, so it’s nice to hear it’s a cute read. I understand that protagonists can make foolish mistakes at times, but as long as the author isn’t condoning it or being tone-deaf about it, I’m always down for divisive characters. 😁

Penny can definitely be a stupid teenager sometimes, but honestly, who wasn’t?? She’s not really a role model, but she is realistic. I hope you like it if you get the chance to read it! 😊
