Tag: This or That

Thank you so much to Luana at bookstormgirl for tagging me in this one! Over on her blog, she referred to it as “torturous” and I can’t really say that she’s wrong. These were some really hard decisions! Also, the whole format of her post was so much fun! I would love to do a collaboration like that someday. 🙂

This tag was originally created by Cait at Paperfury, and then Luana and Iris added in some more questions.

1. SERIES OR STANDALONE

Okay, I can actually answer this one! In general, I prefer standalones.

2. MAGIC EARNED OR MAGIC BORN

Hmm, I think I’d have to go with magic born. I love reading about a character learning how to use their magic.

3. ENEMIES-TO-LOVERS OR FRIENDS-TO-LOVERS

This is a cruel, cruel question. These are my two favorite tropes! I think… if I were forced to decide… like, if there was a gun to my head… I’d probably go with enemies-to-lovers because of the banter. I love banter.

4. HILARIOUS BANTER OR EMOTIONAL RUIN

Easy! Hilarious banter. See above.

5. LOVE TRIANGLE OR INSTA LOVE

I don’t particularly like either one of these, but I’d probably have to go with instalove. At least once we’ve established that two characters are “in love” (although, if they’ve just met, let’s be honest… it’s probably just lust) there’s an entire book to expand on their feelings!

6. KEYBOARD-SMASH FANTASY NAMES OR ALL NAMES START WITH SAME LETTER

I’m trying to think of a book where all the names start with the same letter and I can’t! (If you can think of one, let me know.) That said, I’m pretty sure I’d get everybody confused if they had similar names, so I’ll go with keyboard-smash fantasy names. I don’t have a problem with weird names and I can just make up some crazy pronunciation in my head. 🙂

7. MEAN PARENTS OR DEAD PARENTS

I have no strong feelings either way, as long as there’s a point to it. I mean, don’t just have mean parents just to have mean parents and don’t just have dead parents because it’s the cool thing to do. As long as the state of the parents serves some purpose, I’m good with it. That said, if I had to pick… dead parents.

8. SUPERMODEL LOOKS OR CONSTANTLY SAYS HOW “PLAIN” THEY ARE

We all know that the “plain” characters are actually secret supermodels anyway, so I’m going to go with supermodel looks.

9. FACE ON COVER VS TYPOGRAPHY ON COVER

Typography, for sure!

10. VILLAIN TURNING A LITTLE GOOD OR HERO TURNING A LITTLE BAD

I think I’d have to go with villain turning a little good. I love it when villains get redeemed because then you get into that weird mindset of wanting to hate them but not really being able to anymore. Don’t get me wrong, heroes turning a little bad can be fun to read about too, but I’ll take a villain with a heart of gold any day.

11. BEST FRIEND DIES OR LOVE INTEREST DIES

Is this the hardest question ever?? How am I supposed to choose? I also feel like it really depends on the book! But let’s see, in general, I think I’ll kill off the love interest. At least the best friend will be around to pick up the pieces. I’m glad that question is over. 😅

12. AWESOME WRITING WITH A DULL PLOT OR AMAZING PLOT WITH MURDEROUSLY BAD WRITING

I think I answered this question once before and chose a good plot with bad writing. Well, today I am here to tell you that my opinion has changed and I’ll go with awesome writing with a dull plot. I have slogged through some really terribly written books where some very exciting things happen, and I don’t need to repeat that experience. There are some awesome character-driven books where not a lot happens, and I’ll take that any day.

13. CLIFFHANGER ENDING OR HEARTBREAKING ENDING

I’d rather not have my heart broken, so even though I really hate cliffhangers, I’ll go with the cliffhanger ending.

14. BREAKING THE SPINE OR DOG-EARING THE PAGES

Let me be honest: in real life, I’m not going to do either one. But, for the sake of this tag, I’ll choose breaking the spine. I’ve just never seen the point of dog-earing.

15. “BAD BOY” TROPE OR “PERFECT GOLDEN BOY” TROPE AS THE LOVE INTEREST

The perfect golden boy is never really perfect, so I’m going to go with the bad boy trope. At least he’s honest about what he is, and knowing what I know about the romance genre, I’m pretty sure he’ll be revealed to be a total cinnamon roll eventually. 😊

I’m tagging anybody who hasn’t already done this!

I never know who to tag, so let me know if you like tags & also if you hate them. Are your answers different than mine? Feel free to leave your answers in the comments, or, if you decide to do the tag, please link back to me so I can see your answers!

I accidentally cracked the spine to my Mortal Instruments books (just book 5 that it’s noticiable). I’m not to worried about it. And I would kill a love interest instead of my friend

I’m sure I’ve accidentally cracked the spine on some books before, but in general, I try to be really gentle with my books! A lot of them look like they haven’t even been read! But if it happens, it happens. I’m not too worried about it either.

And in real life, I don’t think I’ll be murdering anybody… but if I had to pick, I’d go with a love interest over my friend too. I could never kill one of my friends!

i know weird names annoy a lot of bookworms, but i love them a lot! I mean, half the time i mispronounced them entirely – but that’s half the fun of it! It makes them stand out when their name is something completely different, and i’m much more likely to remember the character if their name is unique.

This is such a fun tag! I just might have to steal this tag from you. 😉 And I totally agree with killing off the love interest (BFFs are so important), and same, murderously bad writing can simply never be redeemed with an exciting plot; I’ve encountered too many books like that lol. Great answers!
