Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today’s theme is books to pull you out of a reading slump.
Ah, the reading slump, my old friend. Most often the result of a book hangover, the reading slump taunts me as I try and fail to care about whatever book I’m attempting to read. Luckily, there are some tried-and-true slump-busters out there! Here are ten books that have worked for me.
The first thing I try to do when I’m in a slump is read some really cute contemporary YA romances!
- Starry Eyes by Jenn Bennett
- Emergency Contact by Mary H.K. Choi
- Love Scene, Take Two by Alex Evansley
If that doesn’t work, something by one of my favorite authors usually will!
- The Beau & the Belle by R.S. Grey
- Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen
- Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren
But yikes, if contemporary YA romances and books by my favorite authors don’t do the trick, I might try mixing it up with a different genre than usual!
- Fantasyland by Kurt Andersen (politics)
- Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson (humor/memoir)
- Faithful Place by Tana French (mystery)
And if all else fails, a good audiobook usually does the trick!
- La Belle Sauvage by Philip Pullman
What do you do to get out of a reading slump?
Did you participate in Top Ten Tuesday this week?
I’ve heard Furiously Happy is really good and I totally agree about audiobooks being good in a slump! Great list 😊

Cute contemporarys & books by my favourite authors definitely pull me out of my slump or just re reading any of my favourite books does that as well.

I’m glad you agree with me! I hardly ever reread, but maybe I should start doing it more!

I only re read my favourites. You should definitely try doing that, it’s so much fun to go back and get lost in the world of your favourite characters.

I need to read Furiously Happy! I read a sample eons ago, and I remember loving her writing voice, but I wasn’t in the mood for nonfiction. I need to suck it up and plow through it, because I know I’ll love it.

You really do need to read it! It’s nonfiction, but if doesn’t really feel like it. It’s really entertaining!

Cute YA contemporary books always manage to get me out of a slump! And I haven’t read Emergency Contact yet, but I do own it! I really want to read it, but I might save it in case I end up in a slump haha 😅 Great picks, Sara!

What I usually do to get out of reading slump is by watching movies. If that doesn’t help, I will go hiking.

That makes sense! Sometimes you just need a break from reading!

What a great list!! Yes a good contemporary romance almost always does the trick. ❤ And Starry Eyes! ❤ Plus I love that you included Saint Anything. That is my favorite Dessen novel!

Saint Anything was the first Sarah Dessen that I read after a really long break and I loved it so much! ❤

A great list! Usually I force myself to have a long reading session to power through the book as much as possible, and if that doesn’t work, I put it to the side for another day and officially move on to something else. Life is too short to read things you aren’t enjoying 🙂

I usually force myself through books that I don’t like, but I really need to learn how to set a book aside!

I typically go for a book by one of my favorite authors, or even find some short stories to read quickly.💓 love your ideas!

I’ve recently discovered that contemporary YA are just the thing to pull me out of a slump! I usually read a lot of pretty deep fantasy and sci-fi books, so it’s light, fluffy YAs that help put my mind into a better space. Sometimes the brain just needs a break from all of the magic, intrigue, and world building!

I’m so glad that contemporary YA books work for you too! They really are the perfect kind of book when you don’t feel like reading something intense. 🙂

I needed this! I’ve been in a reading slump for a while and I agree with going for YA contemporaries in the beginning. That’s always a comfortable place to start. 🙂 I’ve heard mixed reviews of Emergency Contact but the premise sounds somewhat interesting!

I’m glad I could help! And I know that Emergency Contact can be a kind of polarizing book, but I loved it so much! ❤

I tend to reread old favourites to get out of a slump.
