Let’s Talk About: My spam problem

Well, here’s a post that I never thought I’d make. I usually go through my spam once a day just to make sure that no real comments have been accidentally filtered out. And for months, I’ve just kind of been silently shaking my head as I delete comment after comment after comment. One day, though, the spam was out of control and I had to tell someone.

So I thought, “Who appreciates my sense of humor and also actually knows that I have a blog? Hmm… Daniel.” So I sent him a million pictures and screenshots (okay, it was maybe more like ten) with some commentary and he told me I should write a post about it! So I did! And, honestly, he deserves like 95% of the credit for this because he also had the foresight to screenshot the best of the snaps and send them back to me. In case you hadn’t noticed, he really is the best.

So, basically, all of these Australian car places think that I’m a porn blog.

I don’t know what I ever posted that makes me literally get hundreds of spam comments each week that refer to me as a porn blog, but it’s a thing that happens and it’s blowing my mind. I got 227 spam comments in one day just while I was at work.

“Me and my neighbor were just preparing sex”
Wow, thanks for letting me know.

Sometimes I get really exciting and wonderful quotes. Other times, they randomly replace words in well-known quotes with “porn” and “sex” and some magic happens. In this case…

“Oh, what a tangled porn we weave, when first we practice sex deceive.”

This is possibly the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life.

Sometimes I’m just like… is SELL MY CAR trying to proposition me because I’d rather not.

“i am having a look ahead sex touch you”

“definitely you are going sex a famous blogger”
Thank you for the words of encouragement.

And other times I’m like, “Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t gotten any weird sex spam comments all day!” and then I find out that I should have kept my mouth shut.

At least my porn style is perfect.

Do you check your spam comments? What’s the weirdest or funniest one you’ve found? Do you know why all these Australian car places think I’m a porn blog? Let’s talk in the comments!

I love spam comments, honestly. I got one once that was “you didn’t say that one of the best things about god is you have to play too” which is so ominous and I love it. I also get a ton on non-book review posts that say “great review! love what you said! check out this website!” and it’s like, you didn’t even try

I am CRYING at work over these comments! It also looks like they randomly replace regular words with “porn” and “sex,” but I still don’t know where any misinterpretation could come from.

This reminds me of several letters (yes, physical snail mail) that we received at work (I’m a finance broker for commercial equipment) from one guy that was in jail. While we do get a few letters from jails, usually from serious inquiries, this was over the top with several letters for a loan/grant of $50 billion (not asking for much, right?) who also wanted houses, Mercedes, and limousines. What was their business? Literally selling weed/herbs from out of the country and wanting to buy schools, land, and the like. While none of this was possible anyway due to the nature of the business (we don’t do commercial properties, so schools or any other kind of buildings are out of the questions no matter what), the $50 billion GRANT (money you WON’T PAY BACK) was what topped it. I haven’t gotten any letters from him, come to think of it. I wonder how he’s doing lol.

      A $50 billion GRANT? That’s great!

Pretty recently my boss got a letter from Canada (no phone number, no return address, just an email on the paper) that said his distant cousin had passed away and left him like $1.2 billion dollars if he would just contact them to provide his routing and account numbers. I feel like everyone in the world knows that this is a scam, but I actually had to explain that his distant cousin was not trying to leave him $1.2 billion dollars. Maybe your guy had some luck with someone else.

I just don’t understand why people go around doing this. I get spam comments, not a lot, thankfully. Most of them don’t making any freaking sense and others are in no way related to my blog posts.
Laughed quite a lot reading your post XD. I mean really hard. You’re a great blogger!

These are hilarious – and so is your commentary! 😂
It’s pretty bizarre that car companies would think you’re a porn blog.
I get a load of spam comments but none like this, all mine are pretty boring and all about how (insert website here) has helped them to improve their blog. I’m not sure if I would mind getting spam comments if they were like yours, at least it’d be a laugh! I can’t stop laughing at how they randomly replace certain words.

I do and most of them are about jesus or god or something lol, but it’s wild that they think you’re a p*rn blog (don’t want to attract more). I’ve never gotten anything sexual in my spam comments, even though when you read my domain wrong, it reads Vicky Whore Ads LOLOLOL

Oh my giddy aunt! This was a wild, hilarious ride! Please do another spam problem post because this was something else!

I’m off to check mine out now!

Wow, just wow. Some of these comments start out so nice and sweet and then BAM: sex porn touch. If I were you I wouldn’t be able to deal with the volume of the spam and just leave Gmail to sort it out. I applaud you for reading these!

I checked the other day and 95% of my spam comments were from sell my car and it’s just so strange how they just drop the word sex so casually in these comments. I don’t know what I did to deserve all these sex spam comments. 🤓

This is so weird. It almost looks like the word ‘to’ is being replaced by ‘sex’
Like “preparing to research” became “preparing sex research”, “I’m very glad to see” became “I’m very glad sex see” and “valuable info to work on” became “valuable into sex work on”

Well… the why might have a much deeper story. People can be complicated
Though it might just a badly programmed spam bot. Especially since all the messages are really generic compliments that don’t even seem to apply to a book blog, or the post they are commenting on.

These are hilarious, Sara. I haven’t checked spam comments for weeks now, but the most I get are just saying “What?” so I just delete and block the email addresses connected to whoever left the comments. Tumblr’s a different beast thought. I get comments and follows from porn blogs and they’re getting out of hand.

Ahhh Sara I’m so sorry you get all the creepy but also hilarious (???) spam posters!!! Mandy sorts ours so I’m blissfully unaware and until now was like, wow, every comment on this blog is just so pure!! I guess if you have to get spam, get the kind that makes for laughs and good content 😂😁

Huh I was never even aware there was a separate folder for spam flagged comments until your post! I went through and found mostly advertisements for weird links and Bitcoin but there was actually a legitimate comment from eight days ago that got unfairly snatched and has now been restored. Great post!

Thank you! I never knew either until I saw Caidyn & Chantel @ BW Reviews post about it one time. I’m glad your spam isn’t too crazy! I haven’t had any weird comments yet today, thankfully. And a kind of surprising amount of real comments are filtered as spam even when they don’t have links!

I got one asking me if I wanted to become a vampire the other day, lol. They described all of the benefits of being a vampire. Honestly, if it weren’t for the horrible grammar (vampires are distinguished and have superb grammar and spelling), I’d believe it. 🤗
In all seriousness, I wouldn’t have 🤣I did share it on Facebook though!
