ABC Book Challenge ✰ W

I’ve seen this ABC Book Challenge on a lot of different blogs, but most recently Thrice Read. This week is the letter W. I thought I’d struggle with this letter but, surprisingly, I have a few favorites!

Have you read anything that’s on my TBR? Which books should I read first? Do you agree or disagree with my favorites? Let’s talk in the comments!

What Is the Mystery Blogger Award?

It’s an award for amazing bloggers with ingenious posts. Their blog not only captivates; it inspires and motivates. They are one of the best out there, and they deserve every recognition they get. This award is also for bloggers who find fun and inspiration in blogging, and they do it with so much love and passion. – Okoto Enigma

The Rules

  1. Put the award logo/image on your blog
  2. List the rules
  3. Thank whoever nominated you and provide a link to their blog
  4. Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well
  5. Tell your readers 3 things about yourself
  6. You have to nominate 10 – 20 people
  7. Notify your nominees by commenting on their blog
  8. Ask your nominees any 5 questions of your choice; with one weird or funny question (specify)
  9. Share a link to your best post(s)

Three Facts about Me

  1. When I was little, I wanted to be a marine biologist, a firefighter, a teacher, a doctor, and a veterinarian. I ended up doing none of these — I work as a medical coder.
  2. I decorate my desk at work with tons of pictures — I have pictures of almost all of my coworkers’ kids along with pictures of my cat and a picture of me and my boyfriend.
  3. At my high school senior awards ceremony, I was voted “best musician,” which is really interesting since I haven’t played an instrument with any regularity since I graduated.

The questions:

Do you share your blog with people you know in your real life?
The answer to this question used to be “absolutely not,” but things change sometimes. There are not many people from my real life that know about my blog, but there are a few: my boyfriend, his mother, and one of my good friends from work all know about it.

What are your ultimate blog goals?
My biggest goal with this blog is just to have a good time. I love talking about books and I don’t want this to ever feel stressful or like another job. That said, I do want to push myself out of my comfort zone a little bit by doing some collaborations and building relationships with publishers.

Do you see yourself blogging when you’re 50?
Definitely! I’ve been blogging for more than half my life and I don’t see it stopping any time soon.

Who is your role model, fictional or otherwise?
I think my mom is a pretty good role model. ❤

What are some books do you think are underrated?
Interestingly enough, I did a Top Ten Tuesday post about this not too long ago! Some books I included were You Asked for Perfect by Laura Silverman, The Big F by Maggie Ann Martin, and The Brightsiders by Jen Wilde.

Bonus: You find out the world ends tomorrow; what do you do?
Well, I’m not dying alone in my apartment, so I’m probably going to board a plane and go visit someone I love.

Recent(ish) Favorite Posts

I’m not going to nominate anyone, but if you’d like to answer Laurel’s questions, please feel free! (And don’t forget to link back to me so I can see your answers.) Do people in your real life know about your blog? What’s your favorite underrated book? Let’s talk in the comments!

Book review: Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh

Hyperbole and a Half by Allie Brosh
Rating: ★★★★★
Links: Amazon • TBD • Goodreads
Publication Date: October 29, 2013
Source: Borrowed

This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative–like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it–but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book:

Stories about things that happened to me
Stories about things that happened to other people because of me
Eight billion dollars*
Stories about dogs
The secret to eternal happiness*

*These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!

Fun fact: I was obsessed with Hyperbole and a Half when I was a teenager. I followed Allie’s blog religiously, often laughing until I cried while reading her posts. I was so excited when I heard that she was going to be published! I added this book to my TBR and then just… didn’t read it for five years.

Well, let me tell you, it was worth the wait. I was worried that my sense of humor would have changed and I wouldn’t find Allie as funny as I did all those years ago, but she’s still hilarious. I loved this book. I read it in one night. I couldn’t put it down.

I’m not even sure what my favorite story was since I loved all of them so much. Maybe the goose. But anyway, this was an easy five stars for me. It doesn’t look like Allie does any writing anymore, but if she ever decides to publish again, I’ll be preordering.

#mmd19: a book you’ve been meaning to read
#ps19: your favorite prompt from a past POPSUGAR reading challenge (2015 – a book you can read in a day)

Tag: What’s On Your Heart

Thank you to Laura Beth for tagging me in this very cute tag! As we all know, I’m all about romance (mostly online, although more recently, in my real life too). Without further ado, here’s the what’s on your heart tag. ❤

Here are the rules:

  • Thank the person who nominated you to participate.
  • Link back to the original post (Purple Rose’s & Dollfaced Writer’s)
  • Attach an image that inspires you regarding the month’s theme (or use the original).
  • Talk about what this month’s theme means to you.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Nominate 3 people to participate.
  • Enjoy the rest of your month

What’s on my heart:

Without getting too sappy, what’s on my heart is how completely happy I am in my current relationship. I feel like Taylor Swift’s song “Begin Again” really describes everything that I’ve been through in the last year or so (or, let’s be honest, last several years), leading up to now.

This month’s questions:

Do you believe in love at first sight?
I think love at first sight is a tricky thing. It’s easy to be attracted to someone at first sight. It’s also possible to just click with someone the first time you talk to them. But love? I don’t think you can fall in love after just seeing someone. I need some good conversation and an actual connection for that to happen.

Do you believe in soulmates?
Absolutely. Sometimes you just find that one person that checks every box you didn’t even know you had.

What’s the first thing you notice about a person?
Their smile, I guess. You can tell a lot about a person from their smile and how genuine or fake it is.

What’s your ideal date?
Honestly, I just like spending time together. That said, my boyfriend and I went to get chocolate fondue recently and it was so great!

What traits do you look for in a friend/significant other?
Well. I guess I look for the same traits in both. I want someone who can make me laugh. Someone who legitimately cares about my well-being. I want someone who will treat me (and others!) with respect and stay loyal to me. And I want someone I can have fun with.

What are your thoughts on being friends with an ex?
I’ve only ever had one very dramatic breakup in my life, so I’m possibly not the best person to be asking this question. I don’t want to be friends with my ex for many reasons that I won’t get into on my blog, but one reason that I will share is that I don’t want him to feel that there’s a chance of us ever, ever, ever getting back together.

If you’re a believer, when did you give your heart to the Lord? If not, what in life keeps a bounce in your step?
You know, I went to 13 years of Catholic school. These days, I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m an atheist, but maybe I’m kind of agnostic? I’m not really sure, but I do know that I only go to church for weddings, funerals, baptisms, and the occasional holiday if requested.

What keeps a bounce in my step is probably my belief that everything happens for a reason and that everything will work out in the end. I try to remain as optimistic as I can.

Here are some pictures of me and my boyfriend being cute. ❤

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten artists I’ve been listening to on repeat

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today is an audio freebie, meaning audiobooks, music, podcasts, or anything that you listen to. I decided to go with ten artists I’ve been listening to on repeat because I’ll take any opportunity to talk about music.

Also, much of the credit for this list goes to my boyfriend for making sure I know all about the latest and greatest songs. ❤

If you’ve read my last few Weekly Updates, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that I’m currently obsessed with Sigrid. I just love her so much and I hope that she announces a US tour soon!

some current favorites:

There’s something about dodie’s music that just makes me so happy. I have at least one of her songs on most of my playlists.

some current favorites:

I guess it was last summer when Alt Nation started playing the heck out of “You Should See Me in a Crown.” I was just kind of like… oh, okay. I didn’t have any strong opinions either way. But then one day pretty recently my boyfriend told me to listen to some of her other songs, and I fell in love.

some current favorites:

I’m actually going to a Broods concert next month and I’m so excited! They’re one of my newest obsessions.

some current favorites:

This one probably shouldn’t come as much of a shock either, since I don’t even know how many times I’ve included Lorde’s songs in my Weekly Updates. I think one time I even did a playlist of all my favorite Lorde songs.

some current favorites:

Another favorite artist that shouldn’t come as much of a shock is Taylor Swift. I am, quite honestly, obsessed with her. (And have been for at least a decade.) I’ve done multiple Taylor Swift tags (see the first one here and a more recent one here) and also did a Top Ten Tuesday post about which of her songs I think would make great books. I don’t even know how I chose my current favorites, but I somehow did.

some current favorites:

I think it was about two years ago that I first went to a twenty one pilots concert. This summer, I’m going to another one. I always love them, but my obsession comes in waves. I’m not super obsessed right now, but I’m sure it won’t be long before I get into another mood where they’re all I want to listen to.

some current favorites:

Bastille somehow breaks my heart and makes me happy all at the same time. I don’t even know how it works, but I love them so much.

some current favorites:

(side note: I recently met someone named Laura Palmer and I wanted to ask her if she knows she shares a name with a great Bastille song, but I didn’t want to be weird so I didn’t.)

I almost went to a Satellite Mode show a few months ago. I don’t even remember why I didn’t, but they’re from New York, which is like an hour away from me, so it’s definitely going to happen someday.

some current favorites:

Another concert I almost went to was Chelsea Jade in Brooklyn! The concert ended up getting cancelled, but I have faith that someday she’ll come back.

some current favorites:

Did you do your own Top Ten Tuesday post today? Feel free to leave your link in the comments and I’ll check it out! What have you been listening to lately? Are you a fan of any of these artists? Let’s talk in the comments!
