Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about things that make me pick up a book, which is a pretty fun topic! I’ve been pretty busy the last few weeks, so I’m happy about this easy topic. 🙂 We’ve done a topic like this in the past, but I’ve tried to avoid repeating my answers.
written by a favorite author (obviously)
This is the only one of my previous answers that I’m repeating, because… obviously I’m going to read books by my favorite authors. That’s why they’re my favorites. Because I want to read everything they write.
featuring a friends-to-lovers romance
I’m a sucker for a good friends-to-lovers romance. The more pining, the more history, the more sexual tension, the better. If the book features friends falling in love, I’m probably going to read it.
featuring an enemies-to-lovers romance
The only thing that could possibly be better than friends-to-lovers is enemies-to-lovers. I have to be in the right mood for this trope, though, and it has to be done correctly for me to want to read it. There has to be a lot of banter, but they can’t be mean to each other.
Another thing I’m a total sucker for? Texts. Give me two virtual strangers who start texting and slowly fall in love. I. Will. Melt. You can even give me friends that send some really great texts, and I’ll want to read it.
it’s a graphic novel and I don’t feel like reading an actual novel
This is a more recent thing for me, but I find that a lot of the times when I don’t feel like reading an actual book, a graphic novel does the trick. I’ve read SO MANY graphic novels over the last few months because they’re quick and easy and make me feel like I’m accomplishing something.
it satisfies a reading challenge prompt
If I pick up a book that’s outside of my comfort zone, it’s most likely for a reading challenge. I’ve found some books that I’ve really loved through reading challenges and I’m sure I’ll find a lot more!
a title or plot that reminds me of a favorite song
So, here’s the thing. I’m really into music. I’m also really into books that remind me of my favorite music. For example, I’m a huge Taylor Swift fan and there’s a book by Brigid Kemmerer coming out later this year called Call It What You Want. I literally have no idea what it’s about, but I want to read it. I’m dying to read Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo for the sole reason that it reminds me of the Keane song. And If I’m Being Honest is one of my favorite dodie songs, so clearly, I need to read Emily Wibberley & Austin Siegemund-Broka’s new book too!
I’ve owned it forever and want it off my TBR
This is the case for at least three books I read each month. Sometimes I have no other reason for picking up a book than just wanting it off my list.
it’s not too overhyped, but it has great reviews
We all know that I have a problem with overhyped books, so I tend to avoid them for at least a few months until the hype dies down. That said, when a book is getting great reviews but isn’t too terribly overhyped, I’m probably going to read it sooner rather than later.
I think it has a great message
In general, I don’t like “preachy” books. I don’t want the message to be shoved down my throat. But I think it’s great when a book subtly touches on important subjects without being heavy-handed.
