Top Ten Tuesday: Crazy things I’ve done for the love of books

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about crazy things I’ve done for the love of books, which was a topic submitted by Aggie’s Amygdala. I tend to think of myself as a not-very-crazy person, but luckily, my boyfriend was very helpful in pulling together a list of crazy-ish things I’ve done. 🙂

Created this blog!

As I’ve said a million and one times in the last year, I moved my blog here from Tumblr in hopes of more interaction. (It worked better than I could have ever expected.) That crazy, spur-of-the-moment decision has resulted in some of my best memories!

Went to BookCon basically by myself!

Okay, so I wasn’t technically by myself at BookCon. I went with my ex, who isn’t a big reader. This year I’ll be going with someone who loves books as much as I do and I’m super excited about it.

Rescued textbooks that weren’t even mine!

Speaking of the above ex, when we were separating our belongings after our breakup and moving out of our shared apartment, he casually mentioned that he was just going to put his old textbooks in the trash. EXCUSE ME, BOOKS IN THE TRASH? NOPE. I took those textbooks and sold what I could on Amazon and Chegg. The rest will get donated to the library.

Refused to DNF books even if I hated them!

I think we all know that I have a problem with finishing books I hate. The problem is that I slog through, even if the book is the worst thing I’ve ever read, just because I have a tiny glimmer of hope that it might get better.

Went to a used bookstore on vacation and mailed the books back to myself!

Remember when I went to an enormous used bookstore in Tennessee? It’s a great memory. I didn’t go too crazy (although I easily could have) but I definitely didn’t have room to bring those books back with me, so I had to stop at the post office and mail them.

Almost chopped my finger off with a mandoline because I was too into my audiobook!

The book, in case you’re wondering, was Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, and I gave it five stars.

Braved the crowds at a children’s book festival to get signed copies for Christmas presents!

I might love books, but I do not love large crowds of people. That said, when I heard about a children’s book festival last summer, I got over my fears and knocked out a bunch of Christmas shopping all in one day. I also got some things for myself, because why not.

Dropped everything when I heard about a YA panel happening at my library!

I was on the phone with my mom one day last summer when I saw that a bunch of YA authors (including Claire Legrand and Emily X.R. Pan) were doing a panel at my library! I told my mom book things were happening and sprinted to the car to make it there just in time. The funny thing about this is, at the time, I hadn’t even read anything by any of the authors on the panel.

Staying up all night (with tears streaming down my face) to finish Me Before You!

It’s not often that I’ll forego an entire night of sleep for a book, but I just had to know how Me Before You would end! And even though I knew it was going to break my heart, I still kept going. I was a zombie at work the next day, but I think it was worth it.

Marathoning the entire Hunger Games series over my spring break in college, not taking into account that I still had to work!

I had a few different jobs during my last year of college. My main job was working at the dorm desks, but I also worked as a Spanish tutor at one of the local high schools for a few hours a week. I was so excited to read The Hunger Games series and figured spring break would be a great time to do it since the desks were closed… but guess what? The high school wasn’t. I was basically dead the following day, but the bright side is that I had a great series to recommend to my students.
