It’s no secret that I’ve been really into graphic novels recently. I’ve had a few people ask me for recommendations of where to get started, so I figured I’d share some of my favorite graphic novels!
Saga by Brian K. Vaughan

Audience: Adult • Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy • Series/Standalone: Series
Without a doubt, my favorite graphic novel is Saga. Every volume of it is amazing, from the characters to the plot to the artwork. You really can’t go wrong with Saga… unless you’re easily offended, because there is a lot of sex and violence.
Sheets by Brenna Thummler

Audience: Middle Grade • Genre: Fantasy • Series/Standalone: Standalone
This is an adorable graphic novel about a girl who befriends the ghost that haunts her family’s laundry business.
Scott Pilgrim, Vol. 1 by Bryan Lee O’Malley

Audience: Young Adult • Genre: Humor • Series/Standalone: Series
If you’ve seen and enjoyed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, you’ll probably love its source material. This was a graphic novel that I read before I got really into graphic novels.
What Makes Girls Sick and Tired by Lucile de Pesloüan

Audience: Young Adult • Genre: Nonfiction • Series/Standalone: Standalone
When it comes to introductions to feminism, this is one of the best that I’ve seen. It really clearly illustrates the problems that women face in today’s society without being too in-your-face about it.
Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Audience: Young Adult • Genre: Nonfiction (Memoir) • Series/Standalone: Standalone
It’s been about four years since I read Persepolis but I still remember exactly how it made me feel. I think I learned more about the Islamic Revolution from this book than I did in 17 years of school.
Paper Girls by Brian K. Vaughan

Audience: Young Adult • Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy • Series/Standalone: Series
While Paper Girls isn’t my favorite of Vaughan’s series, I still really enjoyed it! It has a very Stranger Things-esque vibe.
The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

Audience: Young Adult • Genre: Historical/LGBT • Series/Standalone: Standalone
The Prince and the Dressmaker is legitimately one of the cutest things I’ve ever read in my life.
Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too by Jomny Sun

Audience: YA or Adult • Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy • Series/Standalone: Standalone
This is another one of the most adorable books I’ve ever read. It features a little alien who has to come to Earth to learn about its creatures as well as life and love.
Alright, so that was my top eight graphic novels! I’m always checking out graphic novels from the library, so I’m sure I’ll be back with round two of this post eventually. If you’re interested in reading graphic novels, I hope that it helped you choose some that you’ll love. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you decide to read any of these! ❤

Have you read any of these books? Can you recommend any amazing graphic novels? Let’s talk in the comments!

I’ve only read two graphic novels in my life but I loved them both. One was Maus and the other was The Encyclopedia of Early Earth! 😊

I’ve heard a ton of great things about Maus, but I’ve never heard of The Encyclopedia of Early Earth! I’ll have to read both. 🙂

I love the Monstress graphic novels by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda! The art is amazing, and the world and story are like nothing I have seen before. Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series is another favorite, though it is strange to its core.
