Top Ten Tuesday: Characters that remind me of myself

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today we’re talking about characters that remind me of myself. This is a pretty fun topic and one that I’ve touched on in a lot of tags, but not one that I’ve made a long list about before. So, without further ado, here we go…

Ariel from You Asked for Perfect

Despite graduating from high school a good eleven years ago (wow, it makes me feel old to say that), I can definitely relate to Ariel’s school stress. More than that, though, I can relate to how he struggles to let his friends and family know that he’s not okay. I’m the worst at admitting when something is wrong and I saw a lot of myself in him.

This girl is your classic bookworm. She just wants to talk about books. She’d rather read a book with a friend than go to a party. She’s just… me.

Penny from Emergency Contact

There some things about Penny Lee that I cannot relate to. For example, she’s pretty rude to her mom and she judges everyone and everything constantly. But there are also things about Penny that remind me a lot of myself, the biggest being that the most important relationship in my life also developed through text messages. ❤

Stevie from Truly Devious

I mentioned in my review that there were two things about this book (and Stevie) that I really, really related to. The first is her feelings about meeting people on the internet — sometimes they’re the best people you’ll ever know. The second is her quote about anxiety, which I’ve probably shared about twelve thousand times since I read this book, but I’m going to share again:

People say depression lies. Anxiety is just stupid. It’s unable to tell the difference between things that are actually scary (being buried alive, for example) and things that are not scary at all (being in bed under the covers). It hits all the same buttons. Stop. Go. Up. Down. It’s all the same to anxiety.

Belle from In Bed With the Beast

This book is kind of a sexy retelling of Beauty and the Beast and, of course, Belle is still a book lover. She also grew up in a pretty sheltered environment. I didn’t think that I was growing up like that when it was happening, but when I moved to a big city for college, I realized just how much I hadn’t been exposed to.

Cath from Fangirl

The description of Cath’s social anxiety reminded me of myself so much! I read this book six years ago, but I still remember being surprised to finally see that in a book.

Jane in most of the Like Us series (but not really Tangled Like Us)

I mostly relate to Jane because she loves cats so much and she’s also really loyal to her friends and family. I’m talking about the Jane that’s a side character in the first three books in the series, not so much the Jane in Tangled Like Us, because she was kind of a mess in her own book.

Bailey from Alex, Approximately

I can usually find something to relate to in any of Jenn Bennett’s characters, but Bailey is a self-described “dodger,” someone who will go to all lengths to avoid conflict, and if that’s not me…

I’m not even joking when I say that I don’t think I’ve ever related to a character more than this pink blobby person.

Madeleine from The Foxe & the Hound

Goodreads

Much like with Jenn Bennett, I can usually find something to relate to in any of R.S. Grey’s characters. Madeleine, though, reminds me a lot of myself and the struggles I’ve had about what exactly I want to do with my life.

Fun fact, I actually read this book when I was 27, and it was a little creepy to read this:

I didn’t plan to be this dysfunctional at 27, but dysfunctionality has a way of creeping up on you. One second, you’re 22, wrapping up your undergraduate degree from a top business school, and then suddenly, you’re sitting alone in your car at 27, wondering how five years slipped through your fingers without so much as a blink.
