Top Ten Tuesday: Childhood favorites

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! Today’s theme is (luckily) an easy one, since I waited until the absolute last minute to get started on it. Today we’re talking about childhood favorites and I’m going to start with a couple books I loved as a very small child and end with some favorites from middle and high school.

Doctor Dan the Bandage Man by Helen Gaspard

I thought this book was the coolest thing when I was little. It had a Band-Aid inside the front cover!

Caps for Sale by Esphyr Slobodkina

I have such vivid memories of reading this one in elementary school.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater

Another book that I really vividly remember reading (and loving) in elementary school was Mr. Popper’s Penguins.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

I can’t talk about books that defined my childhood without talking about this one. I know I read it in fourth or fifth grade. I reread it several times throughout middle school. I think this will always be one of my all-time favorites.

The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce

My obsession with Tamora Pierce began toward the end of middle school when my aunt gave me the box set of this series. It followed me into high school as I subsequently read everything she’d ever written.

Alice series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

This series (all 25 books) is another one that followed me from middle to high school. I loved these books so much.

Mates, Dates series by Cathy Hopkins

I think I read this entire series during my freshman year of high school. I completely related to at least one thing about all of the characters. Sadly, I reread the first book as an adult and was really, really disappointed. 😦

A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray

I was really into re-reading my favorites when I was in high school and I think I re-read this one at least three times.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera

From the time I was about fifteen to eighteen, I don’t think I read any YA. I was 100% adult fiction, 100% Important Books, 100% trying to be a lot cooler than I was. I actually didn’t like a lot of them (shocking) but one of my internet friends recommended this book and I fell in love.

Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk

If we’re talking about my high school favorites, we have to talk about Chuck Palahniuk. Fun fact: I only read this book because Panic! at the Disco references it in “Time to Dance” and it ended up being my all-time favorite of Palahniuk’s books.
