I was tagged by Sailor to do the No Disclaimers Book Tag! I’m so far behind on all my tags but I’m really trying to get caught up. Thank you so much for tagging me! ❤
Questions:
1. Which trope (or tropes) in books annoy you the most?
There are a few tropes that really annoy me.
- Like Sailor, miscommunication is a big one. I hate it when the main conflict of a book is something that could have been solved by a three-minute conversation.
- I’m generally not a big fan of the love triangle, unless it’s well-written enough to be believable.
- Possibly my least favorite trope is “not like other girls,” because first of all, it’s insulting (what’s wrong with being a girl) and second of all, it’s probably the least creative description you could come up with.
2. Which writer or writers do you feel are overrated/overhyped?
I’ve said it a few times now, but Cassandra Clare.
3. What are your least favorite books you’ve read, since joining BookTube?
I’m not part of BookTube at all, but some least favorites I’ve read since blogging would be:
- Troll by Emma Clark
- Follow Me Back by A.V. Geiger
- Dearest Clementine by Lex Martin
- Sacred Heart by Liz Suburbia
- Attraction by Penny Reid
4. A terrible ending, that ruined an otherwise quality book?
While I didn’t read it myself, I did enjoy a dramatic reading of Wilder Girls by my boyfriend while driving across the country. The writing in the book was great, but that ending just destroyed it for me.
5. Which fictional character(s) do you wish were not killed off?
Um, spoilers. I feel like I can’t answer this one. Sorry!
6. What are some of your bookish pet peeves?
One of my least favorite things in a book is medical facts being wrong, like someone ripping an IV out of their arm and going about their business like nothing happened. I also really hate when things happen just to elicit an emotional response. I don’t mind crying while I’m reading, but I hate it when a book feels like it was specifically written to make you cry.
7. What are some books you feel should have more recognition?
- Cherry by Lindsey Rosin
- You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour & David Levithan
- My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran & Larissa Zageris
- You Asked for Perfect by Laura Silverman
- The Big F by Maggie Ann Martin
I’m not going to tag anybody specifically, but if you think this looks fun, please link back to me so that I can see your answers! What are some of your bookish pet peeves? Which tropes annoy you most? Let’s talk in the comments!

Not like other girls yes! Really don’t like that trope and it doesn’t even serve a purpose??
Question 5 is also a super risky one?! Have to be cautious of this one in case people answer it for a book I have yet to get to😂

Yes, exactly, what is the point?? And I know! I’ll have to keep my eyes closed when I see this tag floating around!

Was it you I mentioned to before that I got about 100 pages into Mortal Instruments, dropped it and wondered how she didnt get sued for Copyright infringement by Rowling?

I suspect it has a lot to do with JK already being uber successful and generally pretty magnanimous about that sort of thing. Suing Cassandra Clare wouldn’t be worth it to her, and I could also see the calculation being made that pursuing it would just result in PR trouble. (Stephanie Meyer basically made the same choice with 50 Shades).

That does make sense. I was always surprised that Dylan went through the trouble of suing Rod Stewart.

Well, that kinda makes sense. Dylan is exactly the kind of guy who would sue on principle, even if he lost money in the process. And being, well, Bob Dylan, he doesn’t have to worry so much about coming off as dickish. It’s kinda on brand for him.
That’s a luxury neither Rowling nor Meyer have, particularly given the nature of their fan base. Although it might not actually that calculating, it’s completely possible they just don’t care that much.

I think you might have mentioned that! The whole situation with that series is just crazy.

I’m with you on most of these, but I’ve got to admit, I have a soft spot for hammy melodrama. I know it’s awful but I have found it to be a good pallette cleanser if I’ve been reading too much grim-dark in a row. You know, a li’l Nicholas Sparks chaser to a shot of George R.R. Martin.

I can totally understand that!

Love this. And I 100% relate to the miscommunication trope. I hate that in books and movies/TV shows. It feels like a lazy way to create conflict and I end up spending the whole time reading the book just frustrated.

I totally agree that it’s just lazy conflict. It makes me want to step into the book and give the characters a good talking to so that they can get over themselves and just talk!

I HAAAAAATE miscommunication in books, movies, TV shows, REAL LIFE – BASICALLY ANYTIME THERE’S MISCOMMUNICATION, I TAP OUT! I’m also extremely over the love triangle trope, I feel like it was milked for all its worth after Twilight became popular!
OMG we were learning how to put IV cannulas in today and my friend & I were JUST talking about how unrealistic it is when characters just rip the whole thing off their arm – THAT’S NOT HOW IT WORKS 😂

SAME. Just COMMUNICATE, it’s really not that hard!! And love triangles are definitely overdone these days. (Or… for the last decade or so, maybe.)
And oh my goodness! Imagine just ripping that huge thing out of your arm and walking around like it’s nothing!!
