the not-so-perfect genre

pick a book that undermines the genre as a whole

I’m sorry, but City of Fallen Angels is not a good book. It undermines the entire YA fantasy/paranormal genre because nothing the characters do even makes sense. Everyone’s really out of character and it’s just boring. It’s just 425 pages of everybody whining and complaining.

the not-so-perfect dialogue

pick a book with dialogue written so poorly that it made you cringe

I will leave you with one examples of cringey dialogue from Smart Tass:

“But Hunter, did your concussion-warped mind forget? You already fucked me. You did it to me in kindergarten and every year of my life since.”

the not-so-perfect setting

pick a book that takes place in a location that you wish hadn’t been picked

Distrust is set in some weird, alternate version of Brooklyn where people are regularly gunned down on the street, and it’s just not realistic. I lived about an hour away from Brooklyn for seven years. I have been there many, many, many times, and in many different neighborhoods. I have walked around poorly lit areas at like 2am. I have never once been scared for my safety. This book could have realistically been set in many other places, but Brooklyn makes no sense.

The first character that came to mind was Sari from Airports, Exes, and Other Things I’m Over. I don’t even remember why I disliked her so much, but I was happier when literally any other character (including random side characters, Sari’s love interest, her grandmother… literally anybody) was on the page without her.

the not-so-perfect blurb

a blurb that was so far from the truth that it made you do a double-take and check you had read the right book

According to Megan Abbott, Luckiest Girl Alive has “the cunning and verve of Gillian Flynn but with an intensity all its own.” I don’t know what book she read, but it wasn’t this one.

the not-so-perfect friend

from whiny attention-seeker to full-on traitor, pick a character that you think is the worst friend ever

Basically everyone in All of This Is True.

the not-so-perfect love interest

pick a character you think would be an awful romantic partner

Axl is already cheating on the love interest within the first 25 pages of the book (and, by the way, it’s never even challenged!), so forgive me if I think he’d be the worst partner ever.

the not-so-perfect villain

pick a character that you thought would have amazing evil plans but fell short and disappointed you

In The Pawn, Avery’s uncle is set up to be this really gross, horrible old man. As I was reading, I expected that he’d actually do something villainous, and I guess he does, but nothing that shocked me, and nothing more than really just being gross and horrible.

Oh, lord. Julian’s family in A List of Cages is awful.

the not-so-perfect plot twist

pick a book with the worst plot twist

The award for most predictable plot twist goes to Kiss Between My Lines.

the not-so-perfect trope

pick a trope you wish would be avoided in all future publications

NOT LIKE OTHER GIRLS. Please, be more creative than that. Being “not like other girls” is not a personality trait. It plays into stereotypes and it’s lazy and it feeds into the idea that being classically feminine is somehow a bad thing. There’s also no one standard for what a girl should be, so how can someone even be not like other girls?

pick that awful cover that almost made you miss a great book

Between the title and the cover, I almost didn’t read The Hook-Up Experiment. It turned out to be a really great book, though!

the not-so-perfect ending

pick a book that has the most disappointing ending

I had really hoped that Follow Me Back would end in some way other than how I predicted, but nope. It has the most predictable ending… and then the audacity to act like it’s a cliffhanger.

the not-so-perfect expectations

pick a book that was so hyped that it disappointed you, and you can’t understand why everyone loves it so much

THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN. I like it less and less as time goes on.
